(2nd) Breeder's Cup Yearling Show (Y15) |
"Gabe" is a very flirty and lovable boy around the barn and was known for constantly following his groomers around the barn. Yes, Gabe used to be let out of his stall and allowed to walk around the grounds without supervision. There was no need to watch the colt as he was always aware of where he was and rarely got into a spot he could not get out of. Now that he is growing up and developing studdish tendencies, Gabe is kept in a large stall and spends much of his day pacing in the attached paddock. He is constantly following females (horse and human) around trying to get some attention and has the ladies-man feel to him. The only time he really stands still is when he is being groomed and has apple treats to munch on. Even then he can only stay put for a few minutes before twitching his tail or wavering on the cross ties. Out in the pasture Gabe is truly still a weanling at heart and often runs laps around the other horses in an effort to persuade them to join in. There is only one thing that Gabe is fearful of and the stable hands learned long ago never to lead him by the cows in the pastures next door. He seems the shut down all logic in his brain and gives into the fight-or-flight instinct. On the track he turns unrecognizable and lets his dam's side take over. He is forceful and makes sure his jockey knows who is in charge. Being a closer it is imparative that he know when to make a move and so far, he has made that decision himself. He chooses not to listen to his jockey and will make the move himself when he is ready. As for under saddle, Gabe can be hell on wheels and will turn in a second from being a lover to being a living ball of anger. Jockeys no longer attempt to mount the colt without having at least three people standing at his head at all times. More than once he has blown up with a jockey mid-mount and nearly landed them in the hospital.

TRUE ENOUGH (Sire) True Enough was an original brought in by Meadow Creek Farms in Y0 many years ago. From a two year old, he was raced and succeeded tremendously in both dirt and turf, and a variety of distances. He did not win a lot of big races but was one of the first Grade One horses on the game. Match races became popular with the stallion and he won a handful of the events on top of being a popular stallion of the time. He raced many times against other famous rivals such as Merry Bay King and Bank on Glory, and even had a smaller opponent from his own barn, Out of the Darkness. He sired many successful runners early on, including twins Euphoria and Lusitania, and would go on the sire many more champions. The stallion now holds the titles in the Hall Of Fame and the Breeding Hall of Fame.
DASHING IN THE FIRELIGHT (Dam) Owned and raced under Nature Blue, Dashing in the Firelight dominated the dirt tracks as an older racer. Her first couple years were rough but a warm up to what the mare would accomplish in her fourth and fifth years on the track. Her fourth year saw a huge jump in grade from a Grade Five to a Grade Two by winning eight races, five of which were HOTY. By the time of her retirement at six years, she had nabbed fourteen wins and eight HOTY wins. She is relatively new to the dam world but has already had promising offspring in the likes of Flaming Confidenza, also trained here at OVS. Her younger progeny have yet to hit the tracks fully but Dashing in the Firelight will definitely be a mare to watch.

Maiden Dirt 7-12 Furlongs (2F Extension) Closer Although he can be a jerk under saddle, Gabe's running is phenomenal when the colt focuses on his task at hand. He has the potential to run on both surfaces but for right now Felicity has chosen to specialize him on dirt until the time comes that he can do more than one thing at a time. Warm up is the best time to see the colt move and show off his energy as he is well known to rear up and throw in a few good bucks. Gabe has been known to toss a few jockeys if they are not paying attention and needs a strong rider to keep him from bolting down the track at his own pace. Loading usually is not an issue unless he is having an extremely off day but this shows before the colt even gets tacked up. On his good days, the bay will calmly walk up to the gate and slip right in without any hesitation. Once inside he is surprisingly calm but gets impatient if other horses are taking too long. He breaks cleanly, though not the fastest, and lets the other horses get ahead of him. Being in the back of the pack is his favorite place to be and from here he will study the group and analyze when he needs to make adjustments. Despite what he lets his jockey know, Gabe is always in charge and will blatantly ignore a command from his rider if he thinks it is the better move. Once they start approaching the last turn the colt explodes from his closing position and likes to pass the competition up on the outside. He mentally closes in on the leaders and will do anything to get ahead of them. |
